2023 Charles Honorton Integrative Contributions Award Winner: Markus A. Maier

The winner of the Parapsychological Association’s 2023 Charles Honorton Integrative Contributions Award is Markus A. Maier. This annual award honors members who have made significant research contributions that integrate parapsychology and mainstream science, and thereby have advanced the discipline of parapsychology.

This award recognizes Dr. Maier’s contributions to the understanding of mind-matter interaction and emotions and attachment-theory as part of models of parapsychological functioning.

Dr. Maier is a professor of psychology and is head of the mind-matter research group at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich, Germany. His team‘s primary research focus is on the interaction between subjective and objective reality as described in volitional psychology (explored as the intention–behavior link and acts of free will). This research helps determine the role of emotional and motivational processes during specific mind-matter interactions such as micro-psychokinesis (PK).

Dr. Maier and his team are currently exploring theories of reality that overcome or complement the Cartesian distinction between subjective and objective reality. Any forms of mind-matter interactions, such as acts of free will or similar volitional processes, including micro-PK, imply the existence of a malleable reality between the subjective and objective realm, one that is neither purely subjective nor fully objective but a complementary, third realm or reality. The empirical consequences derived from this theory of reality are tested in his experiments. Dr. Maier’s research is based on laboratory experiments.

Dr. Maier started his career in developmental psychology with his dissertation about attachment theory at the University of Regensburg (Germany) in 2001. He was an assistant professor at Stony Brook University on Long Island (USA) for two years before moving back to Germany to teach in the position he currently holds at LMU in Munich.
