The recepient of  2011 Schmeidler Outstanding Student Award is Jack Hunter.  Jack is currently studying for an MLitt/PhD in Social Anthropology at the University of Bristol.  His research focuses on contemporary trance mediumship in Bristol and aims to explore the role played by anomalous experiences in bringing individuals towards the practice of trance mediumship. He is particularly interested in the phenomenology of the mediumship experience from the perspective of both the medium and the observer. The research is currently taking the form of participant observation with trance mediums in Bristol and is supplemented by in-depth interviews with mediums and sitters. As a means to help promote and disseminate social scientific approaches to the study of paranormal phenomena and experiences Jack established a free quarterly newsletter entitled Paranthropology: Journal of Anthropological Approaches to the Paranormal. Over the past year the journal has attracted a wide-ranging selection of contributions from leading academics involved in the social scientific study of the paranormal. The journal can be downloaded for free from http://www.paranthropology.co.uk/.
