Born 6 Jan 1933, Glasgow, Scotland. Qualified in medicine Glasgow 1957. MD 1965 with thesis on "The Health Services of Malawi". Also MA University of Cambridge, England. Diploma in Public Health, Glasgow, Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Liverpool. Senior Lecturer in Interrnational Community Health, Liverpool School of tropical Medicine, 1972-1990. Honorary Fellow, Public Health Sciences [now Population Health Sciences], University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1991 to present. Diocesan Medical Officer, Diocese of Nyasaland/Malawi, 1958-63. Government Medical Officer, Government of Malawi, 1965-66 [Acting Medical Superintendent, Zomba Hospitals, 1966]. Visiting professor/adviser on Health Manpower Develoment, Kathmandu, Nepal 1974-75. Other assignments in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Cameroon, Turkey, Iran, Jamaica. Musical interests include Scottish Bagpipe, Samba percussion, including performance visits to Singapore, Brazil, France. Politically active in the Scottish National Party [SNP].
