Russell Targ, a laser physicist, cofounded the remote viewing research program at SRI International. He is coauthor of Mind Reach, The Mind Race, Miracles of Mind, The Heart of the Mind, and The End of Suffering. He is author of Limitless Mind and The Reality of ESP: A Physicist's Proof of Psychic Abilities. He is also coeditor of the anthology, Mind At Large.

Here he discusses the process by which he selected and trained the first military remote viewers for the program at Fort Meade that eventually became known as Stargate. He points out that his arrangement with the intelligence community allowed him to publish many of his findings publicly. He maintains that, even though the program was ostensibly discontinued in 1995, there is reason to think that the intelligence community is continuing with remote viewing.

Using Remote Viewing he discovered Cleopatra’s Palace, Marc Antony’s Timonium, ruins of the Lighthouse of Pharos, and sunken ships along the California coast, and in the Bahamas. He is the author of more than 130 technical reports and papers. He has written The Secret Vaults of Time, The Alexandria Project, Mind Rover, Opening to the Infinite, and The 8 Laws of Change.

Here he points out that all life on Planet Earth is connected and interdependent. Life can be found miles beneath the surface and also miles above it. The belief that humans have “dominion” over this vast matrix is erroneous. However, we do have the capacity to be disruptive. Schwartz goes into some detail analyzing the ways in which human behavior can either promote well-being and be life-affirming, or conversely can be damaging to the entire ecosystem.

Here he describes the linkages between focused conscious intention and social change. He notes that the founders of quantum theory in physics -- such as Max Planck, Albert Einstein, and Erwin Schrödinger -- all accepted the primacy of consciousness. He suggests that parapsychological experiments that focus on individual, small-scale performance -- such as experiments on healing -- can be applied at the large-scale social level. He concludes by noting that Mohandas Gandhi utilized these principles in freeing India from British rule.

Here he describes the process that led to his engagement with the field of parapsychology. During his childhood he was fascinated by stage magic. As a teenager he became familiar with the card-guessing ESP experiments of J.B. Rhine. Later, as a physicist, he began to build equipment for the purpose of testing and training both ESP and psychokinesis. Eventually, his work came to the attention of NASA.

Here he describes how the transpersonal psychology movement was a further development by the founders of humanistic psychology. Its focus is on spiritual experiences as understood by many different cultures and traditions – martial arts, meditation, yoga, prayer, and religion. While some have maintained that transpersonal psychologists are merely teaching religion, Tart argues that there is an important difference: they are non-dogmatic and open to all traditions. He expresses his hope that eventually, transpersonal psychologists will gain an understanding of which spiritual disciplines are best suited to particular personality types.

Here he describes how he organized and conducted a remote viewing experiment aboard a submarine off the coast of Catalina Island. The project was designed to test whether or not psychic information was transmitted via extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic signals. This hypothesis was falsified. Additionally, the remote viewers showed that they could locate – and describe in great detail – a previously unknown shipwreck. The entire experiment was both filmed and monitored by independent observers.

Here he reviews the historical research that he conducted prior to preparation for his own series of archeological projects incorporating what he likes to call “nonlocal consciousness”. He describes a double-blind experiment conducted by Croesus, King of Lydia, testing the oracles of the ancient world. He discusses the use of dowsing. He elaborates on the excavations conducted by Frederic Bligh Bond at Glastonbury Abbey in England. Here he suggests that science and spirituality need not be considered totally separate approaches to life that have nothing to do with each other. He points out that, within the realm of spiritual thought, there are many ideas that could be subject to tests and refinements or improvements. Spiritual ideas need not be taken only in a dogmatic fashion. In fact, the Buddha taught this notion. Not only can science contribute to our understanding of spiritual realms, but the discipline of self-observation can contribute greatly to scientific practice – especially in psychology and the social sciences.
