Here he describes a number of cases in which clairvoyance, or nonlocal perception, has been successfully applied to help law enforcement officials solve cases. He explains why these cases can be particularly difficult -- especially from a research perspective. He also notes that particular personality characteristics seem to accompany remote viewers who specialize in criminology work.

Here he discusses some of the central issues in conducting parapsychology experiments. These include double-blind and triple-blind protocols, randomization methods, and target selection. He emphasizes the importance of advance preparation. He also suggests that subtle forms of bias are inescapable for particular individuals and cultural groups. He describes some basic practices and visualization techniques to facilitate both personal and distant healing. Here he describes how remote viewing was first developed. In particular, he focuses on the contributions of research laboratories at SRI International, Princeton University, and the Mobius Laboratory. He maintains that the remote viewer and monitor both contribute equally to the remote viewing process. He emphasizes the importance of focused intention. With regard to training, he felt that the best remote viewers were those who practiced meditation. He also discusses the appeal of remote viewing targets based on entropy and numinosity.

Stephen Braude, PhD, is an emeritus professor and former chairman of the philosophy department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He has also served as president of the Parapsychological Association. He is author of The Limits of Influence: Psychokinesis and the Philosophy of Science, First Person Plural: Multiple Personality and the Philosophy of Mind, Crimes of Reason, The Gold Leaf Lady, Immortal Remains, and ESP and Psychokinesis. He is the recent recipient of the prestigious Myers Memorial Medal awarded by the Society for Psychical Research for outstanding contributions. He also serves as editor of the Journal of Scientific Exploration.

Here he describes how his interest in paranormal phenomena was stimulated by an experience he had, as a college student, with table levitation -- playing a game called "Table Up". He outlines the history of table levitation phenomena going back to the 19th century. Then he notes his own experiences researching the physical mediums Kai Mügge and Ariel Farias. He describes in detail the precautions taken to avoid fraud and error.

Here he presents his research on the case of Katie, the Gold Leaf Lady — an individual who experienced a metallic substance, similar to gold leaf, forming on and around her body. Chemical analysis has shown that the substance was actually brass. Braude goes into some detail explaining why he was able to rule out fraud in this puzzling case. He describes Katie’s other psychic gifts, including trance mediumship, xenoglossy, and clairvoyance. He also describes the psychodynamics behind the gold leaf manifestations.

Here he suggests that human intention is capable of altering physical reality. One example of this principle are findings regarding the placebo effect in mainstream medicine. He also draws upon research on reincarnation showing that physical characteristics, including birthmarks and scars, can pass from lifetime to lifetime. Additionally, Schwartz cites parapsychological research, particularly the Global Consciousness Project of Roger Nelson. Schwartz maintains that these research vectors all point to a new understanding of human consciousness and intentionality.

Here he describes a number of research studies that suggest, to him, that therapeutic intention involves information transfer rather than the transmission of a "healing energy". He describes an entire line of research indicating that the effects of human intention can travel backward in time. Here he develops the idea that psychic and spiritual healing is an informational process, rather than an energetic process. He describes, in detail, a research study he conducted involving infrared spectroscopic analysis of water. The water was not the target of healing intention, but it was in the proximity of healers who were working on patients. Specific, consistent measurements in the electrical bonding of water molecules was observed -- suggesting an informational process at work. Schwartz also describes some of the dramatic, human effects of the healing research.

Russell Targ, a laser physicist, cofounded the remote viewing research program at SRI International. He is coauthor of Mind Reach, The Mind Race, Miracles of Mind, The Heart of the Mind, and The End of Suffering. He is author of Limitless Mind and The Reality of ESP: A Physicist's Proof of Psychic Abilities. He is also coeditor of the anthology, Mind At Large.

Here shares his memories of his late daughter, Elisabeth Targ, MD, a pioneering researcher in the realm of psychic healing. Elisabeth had been raised as a child to consider psychic functioning as a normal part of life. She was also fluent in several languages. She died at the age of 40 from a brain tumor. Subsequently, many accounts began to appear from individuals who believed themselves to have received convincing post-mortem messages from Elisabeth. Russell concludes by sharing a moving story of one such account that convinced him of the reality of Elisabeth's post-mortem survival.
